Group member Jane Ingall led the first workshop of the year. She started by talking to us about the excellent collection of coiled baskets that she and the other members had brought to the workshop. The focus of the day was on using textiles and soft materials in the coiled baskets.

Rice Straw baskets on 18 July 2007
On July 18th we welcomed the first of our Japanese
basketmakers to
Hertfordshire Basketry during 2007. Noriko Takamiya was in the UK for
the launch
of the touring exhibition ‘East
Weaves West’ and agreed to run a workshop for us using Rice straw. The
Group was pleased to welcome Noriko Takamia to run this workshop.
Noriko
showed us how to prepare the material before starting on our baskets.

We had to dip the rice straw in some water for a few moments. |
Noriko showed us how to beat the straw with a wooden mallet to soften the fibres. |
Then we all had a go – much to the amusement and interest of the children and staff in the playgroup. |
Noriko showed us how to make cord by rolling the fibres between our hands… she made it look so easy… John and Norma are having a good try |
Excellent team work from Roger and Tricia |
Two members of the group had a go at making straw sandals |
…and others made bags or bottle holders. |

Complex Plaiting with Somband workshop on 26 September 2007
We were delighted to welcome Kazue Honma to run a one day workshop for us. She was in the UK as part of "East Weaves West - Basketry from Japan and Britain", which is a travelling exhibition showcasing the work of British and Japanese basketmakers. The exhibition is showing at Hove Museum and art gallery from 18 January 2008 to 2 May 2008.
For the first part of or workshop, Kazue encouraged us to explore different ways to manipulate somband. We also tried a series of simple and more complex knots before our final challenge of a form with 8 corners.
