Hertfordshire Basketry

Garden Leaves Workshop at Christchurch Baptist Church, Welwyn Garden City. 3 December 2005

Tricia Lilley led a workshop making baskets from Iris leaves and other long thin leaves gathered from our gardens. We each arrived with various bundles of leaves and damped them down to soften them. Tricia initially showed us her collection of Iris leaf baskets and explained about her project researching a local maker of these baskets, which she submitted for her City & Guilds. Tricia then showed us how to weave a simple 5-strand plait, and we then got down to it ourselves. Most people attempted plaiting as this was a new technique for them, although some also tried coiling.
