About the Mid Herts Guild

line of sheep

The Guild was formed in 1977 by a group of people interested in crafts like weaving, spinning and dying and eager to share information and ideas and to promote and encourage these crafts in the community.

We meet on the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 7.30pm to 10.00pm in Oxlease Methodist Church, Woods Avenue, Hatfield. .

The Guild has a small but comprehensive library of books about spinning, weaving and other textiles, and a set of videos on spinning and weaving all of which members can borrow. The Guild also owns two spinning wheels and a drum carder that members can hire, in order to try out their skills before committing themselves to buying their own. We have a sales table at meetings where members can sell items and contribute 10% of the sale price to Guild funds.

Throughout the year members give demonstrations of their skills at craft fairs, county shows, school and college open days and other venues (see our Events page).

An article about the Mid Herts Guild appeared in the June 2003 Edition of 'Hertfordshire Countryside' magazine. Click on the links below to see each page.

The Association of Guilds of Weavers Spinners and Dyers

The Mid Herts Guild is a member of the Association of Guilds of Weavers Spinners and Dyers. The Association produces the quarterly magazine The Journal, which is available through the Guild. It also circulates a newsletter twice a year.

The Association organises a National Exhibition every other year, each held at different venues, to which members may submit items for selection through the Guild. The Association also organises a Summer School, held on alternate years to the National Exhibition. Week-long courses on weaving, spinning and dying are organised, and any guild member is entitled to attend.

The Association holds an Annual Council Meeting to which the Guild can send one delegate and one observer. This provides an opportunity to keep in touch with the activities and members of other guilds in the country. A Biennial Conference is held on alternate years and at different locations.
